ARC 750 - Studio Louisville - 2019 (Art Shed)

Art Shed

Professor: Jeffrey Johnson

Partners: 21C Museum Hotels, LG&E, City of Louisville

Project Overview:

This semesters studio was in conjunction with another class, Building Systems Integrated. The studio project was to take an existing building and adapt and reuse the building and to produce the full design process documents for the project. This includes the schematic design, structural system, MEP systems, construction details, as well as product selection for select materials.

Building Program: Art Shed

With conjunction with 21C Museum, Studio Louisville will be rethinking “storage”. There is a current need to store approximately 1,500 pieces at any given time but there is no current space to exhibit the pieces in the traditional museum layout. This creates an opportunity for an architecture design that will allow pieces to be showcased that would otherwise be locked away in a building, hidden from the public. This new architecture design will be the starting point for thinking of a new way to display stored art. These new buildings that would lay dormant to public interaction will now be a new community driving factor within the confines of the building site and surrounding neighborhoods. The project will be 60,000–70,000 sf art storage and public exhibition/event facility in Louisville, Kentucky. The building is an existing structure currently owned and used by the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. and is in the western part of Louisville in the neighborhood of Portland. LG&E is currently trying to sell the building back to the city but the city needs a reason to purchase the building. The city approached the College of Design with the idea of our satellite studio proposing different programs for the building. Our goal was to propose a program that will reconnect the neighborhood of Portland back to Louisville. The idea was a communal space that draws the Portland residence as well as getting the downtown residents reen-gagedwith the are.

Program:

The Art Shed Facility will include the following but is not limited to:

• Art Storage/Archive: 25,000-30,000 sf

• Public Event Space/Exhibition: 10,000-15,000 sf

• Administration (offices, conference rooms, etc.): 5,000 sf

• Catering Kitchen/bar: 1,000 sf

• Lobby/Public Lounge w/ Coffee Bar: 1,000 sf

• Art Restoration: 2,000 sf

• Workshop: 5,000 sf

• Photo Studio: 2,000 sf

• Mechanical/Service: 1,000 sf

• Circulation: 3,000 sf

• Tenant Space (Future Expansion): 5,000 sf

Site:

The building is located on a secure site that allows for natural light to be a key feature within the design concept of the building. It must accommodate a loading dock which must be able to accommodate tractor trailers and have parking for the museums sprinter and 26’ straight truck. The site is in conjunction with the Louisville Loop, train tracks and the Ohio River. It’s a site within the Portland neighborhood that present great opportunity to further enhance the neighborhood. The location is adjacent to the Phase IV Riverfront project funded by the city. Having this adjacency doesn’t put the whole goal of bringing people to the Portland area just on our site. This allows for more focus on the Portland community engagement and the storage museum for 21C.
