Building Program: Art Shed
With conjunction with 21C Museum, Studio Louisville will be rethinking “storage”. There is a current need to store approximately 1,500 pieces at any given time but there is no current space to exhibit the pieces in the traditional museum layout. This creates an opportunity for an architecture design that will allow pieces to be showcased that would otherwise be locked away in a building, hidden from the public. This new architecture design will be the starting point for thinking of a new way to display stored art. These new buildings that would lay dormant to public interaction will now be a new community driving factor within the confines of the building site and surrounding neighborhoods. The project will be 60,000–70,000 sf art storage and public exhibition/event facility in Louisville, Kentucky. The building is an existing structure currently owned and used by the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. and is in the western part of Louisville in the neighborhood of Portland. LG&E is currently trying to sell the building back to the city but the city needs a reason to purchase the building. The city approached the College of Design with the idea of our satellite studio proposing different programs for the building. Our goal was to propose a program that will reconnect the neighborhood of Portland back to Louisville. The idea was a communal space that draws the Portland residence as well as getting the downtown residents reen-gagedwith the are.
